Hello all of you frustrated PhD students at Chalmers,
this blog is meant to provide information to PhD students who are new to Sweden and don't understand how the Chalmers higher education system works.

But first, there are some urgent matters - you need to register for these two mandatory courses - you need to do that with 6 to 12 months in advance.
Here are the links for subscription to the courses in fall that
http://www.ait.gu.se/english/eer/doct_courses/#010
http://www.ait.gu.se/english/eer/doct_courses/#050

But if you were hired  after 1st of September 2012, you need to follow an additional course - I don't know which one that is - you may find it here:
 http://www.chalmers.se/insidan/EN/education-research/doctoral-student/generic-transferable/copy_of_lista-pa-kurser

A PhD student told me yesterday there are some additional
courses that are mandatory IF you want to become a professor (teach at
the university level - as in have your own lecture).

Good luck!

Best regards,
Alex

PS1: This is the e-mail of Sofia Mansson, the single person in charge
of organizing the mandatory courses (new and old) for PhD students:

Hi Alex,

Thanks for your mail.

For all Phd students started PhD-studies before September 1 2012, the
requirement is to take 6 credit points in "Teaching, Learning &
Evaluation" (3cp) and in "Ethics & Sustainable Development" (3cp).
Your research school can have additional requirements, I recommend you
to talk to the Director of Studies of your research school.

The course information exists in English too, go to
http://www.chalmers.se/insidan/EN/education-research/doctoral-student/generic-transferable/copy_of_lista-pa-kurser

One year of waiting sounds like a problem. Which course is that? I
recommend you to contact the teacher to arrange for you to take part
in a course during your time here. Please update me on the progress or
if the problem still remains.

Best regards,
Sofia

PS2: For the Computer Science and Engineering PhD Research School there are the following people responsible:
Secretary who knows everything: Eva Axelsson
Director of our Research School: Gerardo Schneider
You can find them probably through the http://www.chalmers.se/insidan/EN/
